Barclaycard Reviews
I have always been very satisfied
with the service provided by Barclaycard. It is possible to obtain
lower interest rates from other credit card companies, but watch
out, because some of them don't give you any interest-free period;
with Barclaycard (as with many others I should add) it can be up
to 56 days. In addition, Barclaycard run a seemingly endless promotion
to transfer debts to them for 5.99% p.a. for the entire life of
that debt. Some may meet that, but very few could beat it, being
lower than the Bank of England base interest rate. One nice touch
about this was that, when you transferred the debt to settle another
credit card, the debt would effectively
be interest-free that month. However, to close a loop-hole which
I know some people were using to make a daisy-chain of interest-free
debt swapping (as if I would..?) Barclaycard do now charge interest
from the date of transfer - so, if you'd heard this tip, it is now
out of date.
In addition, Barclaycard don't
charge for late payments, reminder letters etc, whereas many other
credit card providers do charge for these. The charges will be in
the Terms and Conditions, but often you may either not read condition
23.3.4 of the Consumer Credit agreement (having of course lasted
out until 23.3.3), or just think, 'well, I'll get the cheque in
on time.' But it is a recipe for inconvenience (say you're ill when
the bill needs to be paid, or you just forget it), and a £20
charge can quickly wipe out any slightly lower interest rate advantage.
Also, credit card companies inevitably may make mistakes, e.g. crediting
your account late. It's a pain to phone up and write repeatedly
to retrieve your £20 (as I've had to do with MBNA in the past),
whereas any problem with Barclaycard (and I've had none in the ten
years or so I've been borrowing off them) wouldn't really matter
(although you ought to phone to correct any mistakes, because an
error might have an adverse credit-rating effect).
What has really impressed me recently
about Barclaycard is their whole-hearted adoption of internet banking.
None of this 'we'll send your ID through the post' nonsense. You
really can be viewing recent transactions and paying off your bill
(just enter SWITCH details) within 5 minutes of the first time you
log on. To identify you, they sensibly use the fact that the credit
card has a unique number, and even more sensibly the fact that they
can use information on the last posted statement to securely identify
you. They also explain what options you need to switch on and off
on your Browser, and exactly how to do it. No head-scratching and
random clicking of cookie-options required.
No-one likes being in debt, but
if you need to borrow occasionally, have a debt for which you wouldn't
mind a low interest home, or just want a hassle-free credit card
with good service, I recommend Barclaycard.
